Joint Statement by the heads of FAO, IMF, World Bank, WFP and WTO

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director-General QU Dongyu, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank Group (WBG) President David Malpass, World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley and World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala issued the following joint statement calling for continued urgent action to address the global crisis on food and nutrition security:

We offer our deepest sympathies to the people of Türkiye and the neighboring Syrian Arab Republic who have suffered the recent earthquakes. Our organizations are closely monitoring the situation, assessing the magnitude of the disaster, and working to mobilize necessary support in accordance with each organization’s mandates and procedures.

Experts identify factors militating against food sufficiency

Adverse weather conditions like global warming and climate change are some of the factors militating against high food yield and food security in the country, Kwara state government has said.

It added that the consequences would lead to global food insecurity.

Chairman, Kwara state Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Taoheed A. Bello, raised the alarm in Ilorin at the first international symposium on biotechnology and molecular science organized by the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin.

The theme of the symposium is ‘visionary trends in biotechnology and molecular science.’

1,700 farmers benefit from World Bank’s N3.4bn grants in Enugu

Some 1,700 farmers in Enugu have benefitted from N3.4 billion grants from the World Bank’s Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) project in the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this was made known recently during the flag off of the implementation of “Women and Youths Empowerment Programme (WYEP)” by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in Enugu.

APPEALS project is solely funded by the World Bank to improve livelihood of women and youths and it is supported by the Enugu State Government.

How Nigerian Farmers Earned N23.4 Billion Through World Bank Appeals Project

Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) is a six year World Bank assisted project designed in line with the Agricultural Promotion Policy (APP) of the Federal Government.
The project has a target of reaching 60,000 persons in the six participating states, but from the last review of the project implementation, about 55,864 persons have been assisted in the project.
It is expected that 35 per cent of the beneficiaries of the project will be women and youths who will be empowered along Rice, Cocoa, Poultry, Cashew, Maize, Ginger, Diary, Wheat, Tomato, Cassava and Aquaculture value chains.
